The Malaysia Book of Records and Selangor Open

CAS continues the tradition of the Selangor Open despite the current uncertain economic condition. It was not a unanimous decision by the Committee but majority prevails. A post mortem of last year's event showed a poor turnout if not for a group of foreign players passing through at the time. It was made worse by unkind remarks that the fee structure had to be revised to salvage the situation but it was still a poor 60 odd turnout nonetheless

It was very unlike The Malaysia Book of Records attempt yesterday when over 120 players came in full force to make the event a success. Many had to be turned down although the initial plan of just a 108 participants were seen as ambitious by the blue men. Maybe it was the freebies and the carnival-like curiosity that attracted the crowd

Well the Selangor Open had long been in The Malaysia Book of Records (and still is), way back in 2000 during the 27th Selangor Open held in Sungei Wang Plaza. The event was certified as the longest continuous running chess event in Malaysia attracting numerous illustrious players from within and outside the country.

CAS is wishful of a strong turnout for this prestigious event to assure this event is still relevant

The Malaysia Book of Records -'Most Simultaneous Chess Opponent'

Sjn 103430 Ismail Ahmad accomplished his chess simul feat against 120 chess players held at Markas Briged Tengah, Pasukan Gerakan Am in Cheras Selangor this evening. He won 90 games, drew 21 and lost 9 in the gruelling 10 hour marathon to earn his place in 'The Malaysia Book of Records' simul event. It was only in the last four games that Ismail got his break for the 90th win. CAS Vice President FM Mok Tze Meng along with other CAS officials and the men in blue, were on hand to ensure the smooth running of the event.

Selangor Schools garnered 112 points to emerge 2009 Champion in the recent inter-State schools event organised by Majlis Sukan Sekolah-Sekolah Malaysia. The event was hosted by Majlis Sukan Sekolah Selangor and held in Klang recently from 16th - 20th March 2009.

Selangor's star performers were NJM Nur Nabila Azman Hisham (Girl U-12) and Yeoh Li Tian (Boy U-12), along with two other Gold medals contributed by fellow team mates Boys Team Under-15 and Girls Team Under-12.

Runners-up was Kuala Lumpur, although ahead in medal count was edged out (by 5 points) based on MSSM's point system in determining the overall championship and standings.

The Klang Valley schools ( covering Selangor and Kuala Lumpur) stamped their mark in this annual event sweeping 8 gold medals (which carried the most points) out of 12 on offer. In step with Selangor's feat was Kuala Lumpur's Yeap Eng Chiam (bottom left) who took the Boy Under-15 title and Lim Zhuo Ren (bottom right) with the prestigious Boy Under-18 title. Coincidentally both had donned CAS or Selangor State colours in many local competitions. Of special mention is NWM Alia Anin Azwa Bakri (right pic) the Girl Under-18 winner representing Malacca schools but is regarded a 'permanent resident' of the Klang Valley chesswise having represented CAS/Selangor in so many occasions.

( For the record the other 3 Gold medal winners were Perak through Girl U-18, Kelantan - TeamGirls U-15 and Johore - TeamGirls U-18)

Based on the total 17 medals amassed by Selangor and Kuala Lumpur schools and the remaining 19 shared by the other 14 States the former had the numbers and depths to continue to dominate this event.

Congratulations Majlis Sukan Sekolah Selangor!
