CAS Closed 2010: Round 5 Pairing

Rd 4 saw several interesting results being produced. IM Jimmy Liew lost to WCM Nur Nabila on Table 2, newly elected Vice-president of CAS NM Yeoh Chin Seng drew with WFM Nur Najiha on Table 3. A good performance for Azman's children.

MSSWP Chief Trainer Shamsuddin defeated NJM Muhd Tariq on Table 7. Yeoh Li Tian was outplayed by Jimmy in Rd3.

32nd Annual General Meeting Notification

CAS will be holding the 32nd Annual General Meeting on 24th May 2009.



Also, CAS is celebrating her 35 years of Achievement in Malaysian Chess with one tournament for members only on 24th May 2009. This year marks the 35th anniversary for CAS, a milestone that we have seen many people contributed towards CAS directly or indirectly for the success of Malaysian Chess.

CAS will accept new membership registration on tournament day. For new adult membership is RM 40 for 1st year plus RM 15 as tournament entrance fee, however, you must send an email to selangorchess@gmail.com on your intention to join the event before closing date on 20th May 2009. CAS will not accept any walk-in registration on tournament day.

Perkembangan terkini Catur di Selangor

Sesungguh nya Catur secara 'rapid' sangat di minati oleh pemain-pemain di Malaysia. Persatuan Catur Selangor (atau 'Chess Association of Selangor') adalah satu-satunya pengasas berterusan catur 'rapid' ini yang kini akan memasuki tahun kesebelas penganjurannya.

Suasana sukan catur semakin rancak di Selangor dengan lebih ramai para penganjur tampil untuk memeriahkan lagi bidang sukan ini

Sabtu lepas penganjuran besar-besaran oleh Badan Kebajikan Kakitangan Pejabat Agama Islam Klang dan Majlis Guru Besar Daerah Klang di adakan di Klang. Lebih 400 peserta mengambil bahagian di Kejohanan Catur Terbuka Klang tersebut.













Pegawai-pegawai bersama tetamu kehormat Dato' Seri Abdul Ghani Pateh Akhir (berbaju batik biru). Kelihatan di sebelah kiri sekali En Azhar yang tidak asing lagi di kalangan peminat catur turut membantu menjayakan Kejohanan ini. Syabas atas kejayaan penganjuran sukan catur di Klang dan lebih penting lagi pengiktirafan sukan catur sebagai satu riadah yang sihat dan berfaedah.



















Sebahagian dari para tetamu yang hadir semasa perasmian penyampaian hadiah di Kejohanan tersebut. Memandangkan sambutan yang sungguh menggalakkan ada cadangan untuk mengadakan Kejohanan ini dalam skala yang lebih besar dan hadiah-hadiah yang lebih lumayan lagi tahun hadapan


Ong Thian Loong (berbaju merah) berdepan FM Anas Nazrin Bakri (berbaju belang) bermain dalam masa kecemasan pusingan terakhir. Walaupun tewas dan berkongsi mata dengan lawannya beliau tetap menjadi juara dengan kiraan 'tie-break' Solkoff.

Tidak ketinggalan AJK Persatuan Catur Selangor FM Mok Tze Meng dan Fariz Shafruddin turut tersenarai pemain-pemain terbaik Kejohanan ini dengan menduduki tempat Ketiga dan Keenam.

Di bawah kategori umur 18-tahun dan 12-tahun pula di menangi oleh Muhd Nabil Azman Hisham dan Muhd Aziz Farhan Akbar

Royal Selangor International Open Chess Tournament 2008 - The Day After

The Royal Selangor International Open Chess Tournament remained as one of the more successful Tournaments organized by The Chess Association of Selangor or CAS. Success is measured by the participations of current top and active players in the country although the fees seemed to be prohibitive to many, time is not right and the logistics never ideal. Nonetheless these participants were able to overcome such obstacles to show their support and mettle. The journey for Malaysian chess however has still quite a distance to go requiring the self-reliant and independent spirit of these, and other players and supporters who want to see breakthrough results in chess in the country along with sustained and selfless efforts of forward thinking organizers and promoters.


The objective of Selangor Open Tournament from the player's standpoint is not just about winning or outplaying one's opponent. With the long list of strong local and foreign players with equally impressive credentials vying for the top spots the probability of winning cannot possibly be the sole reason. The recently concluded Tournament saw a number of changes at both Fide and MCF Rating List. These rating systems on the other hand serves as a yardstick of one's performance or 'strength' and is widely followed of late.

But whichever way we look at it we need not be too obsessed with the figures to the extent of say, not wanting to play out of fear of rating loss or to go to the other extreme of chest thumping.


But chess tournament is not just about winners, beating your opponents or gaining rating points. In this Tournament we witnessed the Wahiduddin siblings KamalArifin and Khairunnisa' taking part, both established players in their own rights as National Champions. Chess brings out the common interest in them.












They are not as active as before but chess seems to be in their blood. In this Tournament the brother Kamalarifin could still show a thing or two as to draw over Ronnie in the last round despite a pawn down in the end game. In a rapid game one can easily fall into a blunder but definitely not easily so in a Fischer time control.

Another common scene is to see a generational kinship in this Tournament. The current NWM and WCM Shazwani was seen playing in the Tournament alongside his father Cikgu Zulkafli. NM Yeoh Chin Seng introduced his son Yeoh Li Tian to chess only recently and the kid is now making waves in the local junior circuit. Also in the Tournament is a new family from Bukit Jelutong, Shah Alam starting to make their presence felt. The Saleh family is only starting out but looks like the son is already making an impact in this Tournament to secure a place in the Under-12 Category.

This is a strong Tournament and it can be an expensive affair if the only reason is to win. On the other hand this is about the handful game where a family can take part in a competitive environment, on equal terms.

On a final note, chess in Malaysia has still a long way to achieve the due recognition it deserves. Chess needs the all-encompassing commitments of the players and chess enthusiasts to support themselves and to demonstrate their worthiness, or be outplayed by little fortune-hunters and glamour seekers along the way.

Royal Selangor International Open Chess Tournament 2008

In the press today is an article on Audrey Wong, Malaysia's first Woman International Master ('WIM'). She is also the daughter of our longest serving and current Persatuan Catur Selangor or Chess Association of Selangor ('CAS') official, Puan Jackie Wong. Jackie who sat on the CAS Committee since 1985 (the year when Audrey shot to prominence to earn her WIM title in Adelaide) was one of the key figures in CAS that helped shape what the association is today. An NGO and a non-profit institution CAS remains professionally run by a team of dedicated and experienced personnel drawn from various discipline. As an independent body CAS do receive support from various sponsors but one that stands out, since 1983 is Royal Selangor. The policy and decision-making process of CAS however remains solely in the hands of the biennially-elected committee and members.

The Royal Selangor International Open Chess Tournament 2008 scheduled this coming 30th April to 4th May is expected to attract a strong pool of local and foreign players. CAS would like to urge more local players to join this internationally recognized Fide-rated Tournament.

Pertandingan Catur untuk Orang Kurang Upaya ke-12

Pertandingan Catur OKU ke-12 ( 12th Annual "Chess Competition for the Disabled") telah diadakan di Berjaya Times Square pada 24hb Feb 2008. Persatuan Catur Selangor ('PCS') atau The Chess Association of Selangor turut menjayakan pertandingan tersebut bersama Lions Club of Kuala Lumpur Central, Ann Joo Resources Bhd dan Berjaya Times Square. Kelihatan dalam gambar AJK Persatuan Catur Selangor En Kamarul Zaman Khalid (berkopiah puteh) selaku Arbiter pertandingan tersebut.

Juga kelihatan IA En Latif Muhammad, Ketua Jurulatih Catur Pasukan Paralimpik Malaysia memerhati pemain catur kebangsaan Nur Ain Fatihah mengatur strategi menentang pemain tempatan Iskandar Rashid. Di sebelah kiri En Latif pula ialah Ahli PCS Puan Norhana Othman yang turut berada di Nakhon Ratchasima (Khorat), Thailand bulan lepas sebagai Pegawai Teknikal Catur, 'The 4th Asean Para Games 2008'. Untuk makluman Pasukan Catur Paralimpik Malaysia cemerlang dengan membawa pulang dua pingat emas dan dua pingat perak di Asean Para Games tersebut.

Berbalik kepada Pertandingan sehari ini ianya dimenangi oleh Chua Heng Meng, diikuti Ho Hea King kedua-duanya memperolehi 5 1/2 mata, dan tempat ketiga Saharuddin Mappa.
