14th CAS Fourth Quarter Allegro on 29th December [A National-rated Event]: Update#3 [PRE-REGISTRATION IS CLOSED!]

Dear fellow chess players,

CAS has to make this announce to inform that CAS 4Q Allegro can no longer accept entries because the venue can't cater more than 130pax (after trying to squeeze 1 more row of table) and we had accepted up to 142 players in the pre-registration list based at least 10% of players actually won't turn up. 

For those who had pre-registered but unable to attend the event on 29 Dec, CAS is hoping that you can send an email to selangorchess@gmail.com by 25th Dec 11.59pm so that your place can be given to players in waiting list.

14th CAS Fourth Quarter Allegro on 29th December [A National-rated Event]: Update#2 (Last Call !!!)

Last update:- 17/12 @ 8pm.

The pre-registration for this event HAD TO BE CLOSED OFFICIALLY because there are 142 names in the pre-registration list already.

The venue can accept up to 120 pax. Based on past historical data which indicates at least 1 in 8 pax who have pre-registered will not turn-up for the event, hence, CAS will accept 136 names in the pre-registration process.

Another 12 more players have to be placed on Waiting List as of 8pm today. CAS would appreciate player who has pre-registered for a seat but unable to make it to send an email to selangorchess@gmail.com by 25th Dec (11.59pm) so that your seat can be allocated to other players in the Waiting List.

Please be reminded that pre-registered players who yet to make payment, you MUST reach the tournament venue BEFORE 8.30AM on 29th Dec for payment purposes. While for those who had paid-up, you may reach the venue @ 9AM.

14th CAS Fourth Quarter Allegro on 29th December [A National-rated Event]

CAS would like to inform that the fourth installment of the Allegro series will be held on 29th December @ DAT Chess Connections, 4th floor, Wilayah Complex, KL due to various important national-level chess events are organized in the first half of the month.

This is a NATIONAL-RATED Event and likely to be the last national-rated event for the year. The event will be divided into two categories namely Category 1 for players with National Rating 1400 and above, while Category 2 for players below National Rating 1400. Due to space constrain with the new setup in the playing hall, we can only accept the first 120 entries in total.

How is this year edition going to be different from previous years?

1. CAS has decided to raise the prize fund to RM 3,000/= [Take note: Before 2013, the prize fund for this event was around RM 1,800 for two categories combined].

2. CAS has decided to offer equal prize fund for both categories. Over the years, CAS receives strong support from players in Category 2, so we felt that it is time that we should be rewarding players in this group.

3. CAS is introducing special prizes for Selangor Players.

4. CAS offers more cash prize for lower positions to encourage more participation.

5. CAS create more category prizes to encourage participation from all walks of life.

6. The event is going to be played over 7 rounds while maintaining the incremental time mode of 10 seconds per move.


We hope that with the improvise structure, we will continue to get strong support platform from the chess community to drive our events to new heights.

RIP: Mrs. Jackie Wong (1943 -2013)

CAS would like to inform that our longest serving CAS Official, Mrs. Jackie Wong, has passed away yesterday. We are been informed by her daughter, Audrey Wong, that a wake will be held at Gui Yuan Crematorium (Besides SK Kampung Tunku) at Jalan 229 Petaling Jaya.

Anyone who wishes to pay your last respect, you may attend the wake tonight. As for the Cremation, it will be done tomorrow morning at the same place. For more information, please contact Audrey @ 012-3329611.

6th National Junior Chess Championship: Selangor Players Registration

Dear Under-20 Malaysians who born / residing / working / schooling in Selangor,

This year National Junior Chess Championship will be held at Level 35 Johor Bahru City Square Office Tower, 106 – 108, Jalan Wong Ah Fook, 80000 Johor Bahru, Johor from 1st Dec (Round 1) to 5th Dec (Round 9). All participants must attend the Players meeting at 8.30am with Round 1 starts @ 9am. The Champion shall be awarded the title “National Junior Master”. 

 

Please take note that with effect from March 2013, players are advised to perform the registration for National-level chess tournament via respective State-level Chess Association to enjoy a special entrance fee. A direct application with the Tournament Organiser or MCF shall be charged a normal rate.

The rate as follows:-

(1) FOC for NJM, NM/NWM;

(2) Player with FIDE Standard Rating via State Association Affiliated to MCF              RM 60/=;

(3) Player without FIDE Standard Rating via State Association Affiliated to MCF        RM 100/=;

(4) Player with FIDE Standard Rating via Direct Submission to MCF/ PERSATUAN CATUR JOHOR               RM 80/=;

(5) Player without FIDE Standard Rating via Direct Submission to MCF/ PERSATUAN CATUR JOHOR               RM120/=.

 

Selangor players who wish to take part in this Championship MUST fill up 2 forms i.e.

(1) Page 3 of the 6th National Junior Chess Championship 2013 v3 Entry Form;

(2) Selangor Players Registration Form (for those who have not done so).

Both forms MUST BE SENT together with bank-in slip [Standard Chartered Account: 794-1-4102906-2 (Persatuan Catur Selangor)]

to selangorchess@gmail.com by 6TH NOVEMBER 2013 (Wednesday), i.e. four days earlier than the official cut-off date for CAS to facilitate the registration with the Organiser. Any registration there after shall be charged additional late penalty fee of RM 50. Lastly, all expenses on travelling to Johor Bahru and accommodation fees shall be paid by player.

The Recommended Hotel by the Organiser, Johor Chess Association, is JB Central Hotel (3-star hotel), which is situated beside CitiSquare. The special rates via Johor Chess Association are:

1. Room type: Standard King/Twin - RM 125.00 nett

2. Room type: Superior - RM 155.00 nett

Malaysia Inter-State Team Chess Championship 2013: Selangor Captain Report

Selangor wins Interstate Event 2013

I have been honoured to be given the role as a team captain and a chance to represent Selangor in this prestigious interstate event which was held in Sabah. It has been almost 10 years plus since the last interstate event was held. The Selangor team was formed with a mixture of young talents and I being the oldest and most experience. The team members blended in well together and with such high fighting spirit, we targeted nothing lesser than being an outright champion.

During the technical meeting on the day of arrival, there was a sudden change in the number of rounds which was increased to 7 instead of 6, hereby to accommodate an extra Sabah team to make the team numbers even. There were 14 registered teams altogether in this event, 4 of which were from Sabah, 2 from Kelantan and respective representatives from other states excluding Penang, Kedah, Melaka, and Perlis. The event took place at Masterskill Global College in Likas which was about 20 minutes drive from the Imperial Boutec Hotel.

Selangor started off well with 3.5-0.5 wins against Negeri Sembilan and Sabah A consecutively during the first 2 rounds. In the 3rd round, we were paired against Johor and were only able to secure a 2-2 draw. I was 2 pawns up in a different colour bishop endgame with Queen and Rook on the board, however i made a wrong sequence of move which allowed my opponent’s Queen to enter and forced a 3 fold repetition. The final decisive game for that round was between Roshan and Taulani whereby the former missed a winning move in what seems to be an easily won one pawn up endgame. The experienced Taulani managed to seize the opportunity thus forcing a well known theoretical draw. The event was still open for all and the joint leaders after round 3 was KL, Selangor and Johor. KL was paired against Johor while Selangor was paired against Perak in round 4.

The next day we became a little more cautious in our approach against a well-balanced Perak team. We won 3.5-0.5 while KL beat Johor 2.5-1.5. The next match was the most crucial round of all as we were paired against KL. Being joint leaders while enjoying a better tiebreak, it would be wise if we could just hold KL to a 2-2 draw, although by seeding and strength we should be able to edge them. My advised for our team was to aim for a 2-2 draw at least and we would enter the penultimate round with a comfortable lead.

The game started off well with both sides not taking too much of risks. The first game ended with me drawing with IM Mas in an equal position of Maroczy Bind. Thereafter, the pressure started to mount on our young talent Yeoh Li Tian when Sumant was down a pawn against Camilia while Roshan has been outplayed by a fine tactical display by another young talent 9 years old Lye Lik Zang. Sumant managed to pull a draw making the score 2-1 in KL’s favour. The final game was between Yeoh Li Tian and Zaidan Zulkifli whereby a draw was not sufficient to draw level with KL. The game should have been drawn with a 3 fold repetition, however the former decided to take the risk and played for a win instead which was the correct decision. The final score was KL 3-1 Selangor. We were shocked and devastated after the loss, but we did not lose hope and continue to focus on our final 2 rounds. In the penultimate round we defeated Kelantan B 3.5-0.5, thus still maintaining a rather consistent performance.

The final round saw KL paired against Perak while we were paired against Kelantan A. The game was so intense between KL and Perak that I can hardly concentrate in our teams’ games. We were hoping for a miracle as we only needed 2.5 points to win and if in any case KL slipped against Perak, we know we will be crown the interstate champion. After defeating Nik Nazri of Kelantan A, the Selangor team was comfortable with a 2-1 lead with Li Tian’s game still ongoing with a pawn up knight endgame. To our surprised, Perak team defeated KL 2.5-1.5 without losing a single board with Fong Yit San wrapping up the only win in style. This defeat help propelled Selangor to overtake KL as the eventual overall champion on tiebreak to many disbeliefs.

The tournament is very well conducted and planned by Sabah Chess and i must admit that the hospitality here has been very warm and welcoming to all chess players participating. I would like to thank Selangor Chess Association for giving me my first opportunity to captain the Selangor Team to become eventual champion in such a prestigious national event. I would also like to thank my teammates, Yeoh Li Tian, Sumant Subramaniam and Roshan Singh for being part of a great team to make this happen. I must say we were very discipline and adhered to all the rules enforced by CAS protocol during the team event except for one which is to sleep 8 hours a day. Many thanks to NM Yeoh Chin Seng for arranging the transportation and schedule to ensure we have a smooth journey through. Lastly, I would like to represent the Selangor chess team to express our gratitude and appreciation to Encik Anizan Mahruf, our Sabah chess representative in-charge of Selangor team who has helped us unconditionally during our stay in Sabah.
