SSTwo Mall Chess Championship 2014

This year SSTwo Mall in collaboration with CAS will have their event upgraded to a National-rated event.

On 9th Aug, there is an Age-Group event for Under-12 and Under-18 players. While, the Open category shall be played on the following day, 10th Aug.

 

All chess players who wish to join the event, please send an sms with your name and category (U12 / U18 / Open) to Mr. Hamid Majid (019-315 8098) to book a seat early to avoid disappointment due to limited seats on the venue. Payment can be made on event day.

41st Selangor Open Chess Tournament 2014 - Final Results

The Chess Association of Selangor successfully hosted the 41st Selangor Open Chess Tournament this evening. Top rated IM Nolte Rolando ( FIDE 2417) repeated the feat he clinched two years ago with a 8 1/2 points

In the Closing Speech, CAS President thanked the players both locally and overseas for participating in the Tournament. The relatively strong contingent Filipino contingent almost dominated the top tables.. However the local challenge provided enough sting with Mohd Saprin taking the 2nd spot with a strong 7 1/2 points. The Tournament should serve as an invaluable test of  skills for the local players 

Equally strong challenge came from our local youngster Fong Yit San in 6th Position but the most impressive must be our local girl Rosamund Koo who shot up from her 40th ranking at the start, to a respectable 9th Position, a not so common feat for any female in our local open competition.

41st Selangor Open [FIDE-rated]: Update#6 [No Car Day Tomorrow]

Please take note that tomorrow is no car day from 7am to 9am along Jalan Dang Wangi.

Try to come in either before 7am or use Jalan Munshi Abdullah because there is no guarantee that there is no closure at the start of the street despite the map below showed the street will not be closed because at the end of the street, vehicles cant turn left og right into Jalan Dang Wangi (refer to map below).

41st Selangor Open [FIDE-rated]: Update#5

Top seed IM Rolando Nolte is leading the event by 1 full point ahead after 6 rounds of play. Mohd Saprin who had defeated IM Jimmy Liew in the last round is leading Malaysian charge to challenge Nolte. He and 3 Filipinos are 1 point behind the leader.

Updated 23/4:- IM Rolando Nolte (elo 2417) has confirmed to take part in this year edition.

Updated 28/4:- This year edition will see Filipinos occupying top 5 highest rated by elo rating. IM Rolando (elo 2417) will lead the charge followed by Hamed (elo 2355), Ian (elo 2271), Christopher (elo 2263) and Nelson (elo 2260). Meanwhile, IM Jimmy (elo 2216), NM Fong Yit San (elo 2190), NM Yeoh Chin Seng (elo 2114) will lead the Malaysians in this edition.

There are 35 individual prizes up for grab totaling RM10,000/= cash and 3 prizes for Best Schools/Institution of Higher Learning. 41st Selangor Open [FIDE-rated]: Update#3 [Early Bird Discount Extended by 3 days]

CAS shall extend the early bird discount up to 24th April in order to enable some who have pre-registered but yet to make payment. Meantime, anyone who yet to register can enjoy the discount too if you submit the form and make payment by 24th April.

As at 20th April, we have 40 players in the list, still a long way to go if compare to last year 73 participants. With the organizing cost escalating over the years, it will not going in favour of 9-round Classical Time that needs 5 or 6 days of competition. The venue rental alone (without adding tables, chairs and equipment rental yet) is equivalent to this year Champion winning prize, i.e. RM 2,500/=.

CAS really hope the participant numbers can be doubled in 10 days time. There are 35 individual prizes up for grab totalling RM10,000/= cash and 3 prizes for Best Schools/Institution of Higher Learning. For those who wish to land a support by joining this event, please Click here for more details.

This is the oldest chess tournament in Malaysia. CAS hopes to get your support in participating so that this event can carry on as part of Malaysian Chess since 1974.

We appreciate players (listed below) who have signed up for this year edition and hope that this edition does not create an all-time low turnout. It may come a day when CAS has no choice but to discontinue this fide-rated classical time control event because the participants are dwindling in the last few years.

A possible feasible option for next year onwards is to put an end to the Classical time and change it to Rapid time control. Nevertheless, CAS has to make a big decision pending the turn-out in this edition.
